El Grifo Tavern, a wine meeting point
In
one of the most charming medieval piazzas of the old capital of the kingdom,
the city of León, el Grifo Tavern is located. A meeting point not only for locals
but for pilgrims who make of this spot their local reference as it passes
through this city of Roman origin. El Grifo is set on the Camino de
Santiago, perhaps in one of the most beautiful squares in the French Way.
Leading
the crew of this unique tavern, is the endearing Anton, the bar tender, whose
efficiency and friendliness makes the wine bar work daily with remarkable
precision.
El
Grifo has also an extensive wine list of different regions from Spain, apart
from those from neighboring Portugal, which total nearly 100 references. Wines
are also moving away from the typical wineries than you can find almost
everywhere. Even
you
can feel the spirit of the wine at el Grifo, a wine bar which also
features a magnificent cellar.
Anton can advise us on our choice when in
doubt, and if the wine needs to be decanted, it will happen; something very
unusual in the wine bars of our country.
Typical
"tapas" of Leon are served to accompany the wine, but the place also
has a restaurant, making it easy to select some of the wines on offer.
With
only four years of life (opened on March 28, 2010), it is expecting to open a
second floor to provide space to its loyal patrons; especially for winter,
because in summer time there is a superb terrace, probably the best in León.
There are few places to escape or be carried away in the company of a good
wine. Any day of the year, from morning to midnight, no matter where you
proceed, at el Grifo you are going to find this tavern you ever have been
looking for, a place where you could
feel as a regular, and even more, a place to not feel alone.
