Vin de Crete at “Algo diferente” in Bilbao, Spain

By the owner, Uri, we discovered this Greek restaurant in Bilbao, Algo Diferente (Something Different). A place to enjoy delicious Greek Cypriot dishes, and also spirits and wines from both Greece and Cyprus. Next door is La Barrita, a local of the same owner, but with the intention of bringing consumers the Greek wines by the glass. At the same time traditional Greek food is offered at the bar as it does in the Basque Country and the rest of the bars in Spain, we refer to the now world famous and typical "tapas".

We especially loved a Cretan wine, Vin de Crete a red wine from the ancient island, produced from the local grape varieties Kotsifali and Mandilaria. A common mixture in Crete, whereas the Kotsifali provides aroma and corpulence, the Mandilaria offers an intense purple hue, acidity, and gives a tannic character. An easy-drinking wine, of only 12 degrees of alcohol content, with fruity notes (cherry), but also of Mediterranean herbs, while mineral, with a distinct salty taste, the result of the proximity of the vineyards to the sea. A balanced acidity provides freshness, and together with its original taste, makes it an ideal wine to drink alone, on hot summer days, and an ideal company for the Greek food.
