Estancia Piedra Winery, Toro, Zamora, Spain
Located just 10 km from Toro, in an idyllic landscape known
as the Guareña valley, and surrounded by vineyards, it is this family winery,
owned by the Scottish magnate Grant Stein, who found here his particular
wine-making paradise. Around the winery has a vineyard in goblet of 35
hectares, planted in 1968; where it grows the typical variety of the area: the
Grape Tinta de Toro. They are completed with another 53 hectares more that take
the production to more than 250,000 bottles. Most of them are exported, almost
80%, with the remainder being allocated to national consumption.
Its commercial penetration covers all the continents, with a
strong implantation in the Asian market: China and Japan mainly.
The scenery we visit is a careful space that gives off
serenity and contagious that love for the vineyard that is hidden in the spirit
of the owner, giving place to a beautiful set in which the buildings are merged
with the landscape.
Behind the elaboration of the wines of Estancia Piedra is
the hand of José Hidalgo, recognized oenologist of the national panorama with a
long professional curriculum. In its two rooms of barrels, the wines rest in
French oak barrels whose age does not exceed three years. Recently the winery
is undergoing a process of renovation that affects wines, bottles and labels as
explained by the event manager Mari Cruz Mártinez.
In its modern and well-maintained facilities, where there is
a tasting room, shop or restaurant for specific events, we have the opportunity
to taste some of these new wines. The elaboration ranges from white Verdejo,
under the denomination Rueda, to reds reserves with more than two years of
permanence in barrel. We are particularly impressed by two wines that stand out
for their careful presentation and that surprise us for their perfect finish:
Piedra, 2015 based on Tinta de Toro and Garnacha and Piedra Natural 2016, 100%
Tinta de Toro.

Wine of marked red cherry dark with maroon trim, very covered, as it
corresponds to the wines of the zone. It has a nose in which the red fruit
stands out on spicy and even toasted notes. It is a balanced wine with fair
wood that does not overlap the fruit, and a pleasant final acidity. Unctuous,
velvety, has a pleasant step in the mouth with a long finish.
A mention to its elaborate and attractive label; this
includes the fox, emblematic animal of the zone, but also references to the
owner, like its arrival in bicycle to Toro decades ago or the construction of
the mansion that presides the estate.

It is a wine of cherry color very covered, and with
violaceous borders. Very fruity on the nose, with red fruits, and notes of
licorice. The wood is in the background, as well as the acidity, accentuating
its fruit character. It is a very sweet and appetizing wine, easy to drink,
with an aromatic finish that invites you to drink another sip.
